Endoscopic Impressions within the Sphenoid Sinus

Sphenoid sinus has been opened bilaterally: left lateral view. The carotid prominence is formed by the paraclinoidal segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA). The intracanalicular segment of the optic nerve runs above the lateral optic-carotid recess (LOCR), and continues with the orbital apex. The superior orbital fissure (SOF) is located between the LOCR superiorly and the maxillary strut inferiorly. The maxillary strut separates the SOF from V2 at the foramen rotundum (or rotundum “canal”), which is well seen when the lateral recess of the sphenoid is pneumatized.
