Posterior Perspective of the Dissected Pineal Region

Surgical Correlation

Posterior Perspective of the Dissected Pineal Region. The pineal gland and the quadrigeminal plate, also known as the tectal plate or tectum, are demonstrated.  The tectum is composed of the paired superior and inferior colliculi. The tentorial dura is demonstrated on the right side of the image, with the trochear nerve traversing along the incisura. The anatomy of the medial temporal lobe is also demonstrated bilaterally, highlighting the important regional anatomy and optional access to this region using a carefully planned supracerebellar approach. (Image courtesy of AL Rhoton, Jr.)
