Mobilization of Cranial Nerves: Technique

Transcript

This very brief video reviews techniques for mobilization of the cranial nerves away from the tumor during skull base microsurgical procedures. This is a left-sided retromastoid craniotomy. The large petrous apex meningioma that has grown into the posterior fossa has been retracted. Using the suction device, you can see the fifth cranial nerve at the tip of my arrow. The fine forceps are used to grab the encasing arachnoid bands of the nerve and mobilize the nerve away from the tumor. This maneuver prevents direct manipulation of the nerve and preserves the most amount of function. Let's go ahead and review this technique in a moment. Here, you can see that maneuver, grabbing the arachnoid bands. Thank you.
